Essential Tractor Implements Every Farmer Should Purchase

by Vicki Harvey

A tractor is arguably one of the most valuable farm equipment a farmer can own. Therefore, any farmer worth their salt must have an efficient tractor to help cultivate the land. However, a tractor alone can only accomplish so much, especially if it only accommodates a few implements. The more tools your tractor can allow, the better. The options allow you to use the equipment for several purposes. Moreover, tractor-attached implements help to reduce the amount of time taken to accomplish several tasks. That said, you need to know some of the essential tools for a tractor. Here are a few:

Backhoe

Although you might not always need a backhoe, it is indispensable at the right time. A robust backhoe can be attached to your tractor and come in handy when you need to dig test holes for water drainage or a septic system. Additionally, farms need plenty of water, and what better and cost-effective way to dig trenches for water supply pipes than with a backhoe? The best part is that backfilling a dug hole is much easier with a backhoe than with manual means such as a shovel or fence-post digger. Therefore, if you are shopping around for tractor implements, make sure a robust backhoe is top of the list. The accessory saves money and time.

Bush Hog

If you need to keep your field free of prickers, brush, and trees, then your go-to tractor implement is a bush hog mower. Also known as a rotary deck mower, a bush hog is a piece of equipment primarily pulled by a tractor via a 3-point hitch.  The best part about a rotating deck mower is that you can adjust the elevations of the machine. For instance, if you need to cut shrubbery very low, you simply adjust the blades lower. On the other hand, if you are working on tall grass or shrubs, you need to work the bush hog down gradually. Therefore, you have to set the blades high at first and then lower it accordingly as the vegetation gets shorter. Bush hogs can either be self-powered or use the Power-Take-Off (PTO) on a tractor.

3-Point Rake

Despite appearing as the simplest tractors implement a 3-point rake is arguably the most common accessory. Therefore, if you have never used one before, then there is a lot you are missing. It is particularly useful after a land clearing project where you need to drag out the brush, branches and leaves from the field. Moreover, a 3-point rake can also be used to clear your driveway and eliminate rocks from your garden. Ultimately, a 3-point rake is essential to levelling out your farmland.

Making it through a long winter

It's always tricky dealing with the swings of the weather when you are a farmer. You can suffer if there is too much rain, not enough rain or even rain at the wrong time of the year. It can make it really challenging to have enough feed for livestock or to be able to harvest a crop later in the year if you are a crop farmer. Often there are some relatively simple things you can do to manage these issues, including buying supplemental feeds or running drainage ditches. This blog is about managing all of the events that can happen over a long winter as a farmer or farm manager.
